Monahans Sandhills State Park

Today we took advantage of our last weekend in which we will not be swamped with organizing and fixing up our new home. I will be leaving on Monday, and not returning until closing date. We drove about 45 min west on interstate 20 to a Texas State Park. Monahans Sandhills State park. ( pictures ) It was another great day spent in the the beautiful outdoors, and it feels great to become familiar with our new West Texas surroundings.

The landscape is definitely different. It is beautiful. The dunes were particularly foreign to us.  The Dunes had up to 30-40 feet rises, and gave us the impression of Egyptian deserts. The sand is 90% clear quartz. Very fine, soft, and easily blown around by the 30+ mph wind. Evelyn now has wind chapped cheeks.
The skies were oh so blue. I have never seen such a blue. Cloudless, Clear, and beautiful for the pictures.
When we arrived we were sad to find out there were not much to say for hiking trails. Only a 1/4 mile loop around the visitor's center. Then a 1.5 mile drive down to the big dunes. We decided that to get the full effect and enjoy the views we would walk the road instead of drive to the big dunes. It was a nice build up of anticipation for the dunes. I was not disappointed.

On our walk back we had to fight wind in our face. Wind alone is not fun, but add in tiny sand blown in your face and it is a little less than enjoyable. I tried to stay positive and call it my microdearm abrasion treatment. We constructed a sand shield for Evelyn's buggy. The wind was blowing so hard it could push the stroller, it could also fight gravity. When the stroller was released on a hill the wind was strong enough to keep it in place.

I look forward to bringing our Hanky out here. Although I do believe our swamp dog will run endlessly in circles in a hopeless search for the water. :( Next time I would also like to rent their sand discs. Like a sled.
